Moths of Cental California by Alison Sheehey

With over a thousand species of moths in Kern County alone, it is a daunting task to identify moths. This site is in no way comprehensive, but lists just a few of the species experts have collected in the area. Two websites are critical in helping me identify moths that I have photographed, CalMoth and http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/

Below you will find just a few photos of identified specimens, click the links to find lists from the respective counties. The county lists are incomplete as I have found reference to 1165 species in  Kern and the Tulare list around 785. I am in the process of writing the family information for each species and most likely will break up the pages when I am ready to upload the entire lists. Until then just understand my knowledge of moths is limited to the photographs I have taken, I invite you to learn more about the leps of the area along with me.
