Aspen
Grove is
a
montane
to
subalpine
riparian
forest.
Locally
it is
found
only in
the
higher
elevations
of the
of the
Greenhorn
Range
and the
Kern
Plateau
in the
Sierra
Nevada.
This
tree is
especially
showy in
the fall
when the
leaves
turn
from
green to
golden
to red.
The
shimmering
leaves
of quaking
aspen
tell of
flowing
water
nearby.
Found
above
6000'
look for
aspen
groves
along
creeks
on the
Kern
Plateau
in the
Corral
Creek
area.
The most
visible
aspens
are
found
along
Sherman
Pass
Road
(22S05) near a
small
meadow
named
Boy
Scout
Meadow
just
south of
road
22S26.
A visit
to the
aspen
grove in
October
is a
must see
if you
enjoy
beautiful
fall
colors.
The
keystone
species
of all
Sequoia
National
Forest
riparian
systems
is the
white
alder (Alnus
rhombifolia).
This
lovely
tree has
small
bundles
of cone
like
seed
pods
that
hang
from the
branches.
Both the
alder
and the
aspen
have
whitish
gray
bark
with the
alder
being
the
darker
barked
of the
two. It
is found
from the
higher
mountains
down
into the
Kern
River
